1. ACS policy on including 'articles' in your theses:
The American Chemical Society allows student authors to incorporate copies of either the peer-reviewed (unedited) manuscript or the final article as published by the ACS (either in whole or in part) in their theses(1), provided that:
1) they cite the relevant ACS journal and attribute ACS as copyright holder; and
2) the thesis is released AFTER the official date of online publication; and
3) the content of the article itself is NOT made publicly available on the WWW, unless the author obtains a license under the ACS AuthorChoice option(2).
A practical solution for Caltech authors, who do not obtain the ACS AuthorChoice license, is to:
1) have a separate chapter for ACS articles and restrict access to this chapter to authenticated users at Caltech; and
2) include the unique 'ACS Articles on Request' web link(3), that provides free reader access to the published article from the ACS website. There is a limit of 50 downloads during the first year after publication, after which there is no limit; and
3) embargo the Dissertation Abstracts copy until the article has been formally published.
